Leaving Queenstown and heading to Kinloch there’s a certain sense of peace that overcomes you. Leaving the hustle and bustle for a slightly slowed down pace.

You first get to Glenorchy and then head out to Kinloch and the peace is even more so. A hushed silence where only bird calls invade the senses. The lofty mountains surround and you follow the dusty road out to Kinloch Wilderness Retreat and somehow you feel like you’re home.

Toni and John Glover have placed their heart and soul into Kinloch Wilderness Retreat for the past 20 years and with new offerings this year , there’s even more added experiences to excite your trip.

One hours drive from Central Queenstown and you’re in a haven of accommodation, delicious food, events, hiking, biking, relaxing, listening. The drive itself allows the body to relax and take in the stupendous views and then you arrive at Kinloch Wilderness Retreat and you really can understand why people shout “why haven’t I been here before?”

There’s been a shift over the years as to the offerings at Kinloch and with a new year upon us our whānau had the opportunity to sneak a peak into some of them.

You can stay in Ecoscapes (two passive ‘low energy’ cabins designed with “locally sourced green building technology”). Set back against the valley behind these two pods sit nestled in green. Quiet. Peaceful. Private.

Stunning views of Lake Wakatipu you can sit and either watch the view or pull down the blinds and have your very own cinema experience tucked up in the comfort of your bed!

Control temperature, view and privacy inside these amazing pods. Set right against the backdrop of the Humboldt Ranges. Spa pool, a light trip to the restaurant and quiet as quiet can be.

Heritage Lodge is the original 1868 house complete with claw foot bathtub, roaring fires and hot tub to soak those feet after a hike, bike or meander.

Six rooms with Queens, double and bunks available (perfect for the wee ones!), this old beautiful house is perfect for all the family or to invade with all your friends for the weekend.

The most delicious food straight after a good hike is what dreams are made of. Lucky for you Kinloch Wilderness Retreat has this at the top of their list. Bookings are taken for dinner when you’re staying either in Ecoscapes or Heritage Lodge. Fresh, local produce and choose to either settle by the fire in the dining room or lounge on the deck under the stars.

The amount of things to do around the area is immense and the return to your accommodation at the end of day is even more so. Hot tub, delicious food, a place to settle with a beer in hand and listen to the peace.

Take the time to drive out of town and hang out in the wilderness. If you’ve been to Kinloch but it was a while ago and you keep saying “I haven’t been out there for ages” then it’s time to put your eyeballs on the place.

New opportunities, new look, new vision.

I worked with Kinloch on this project but if I didn’t think you’d like them I wouldn’t write about it.
