I am a lover of cake and all things sweet. You’ve known me a while now and know that cake rules my universe. I like to pretend that I’m also posh and know about all things eloquent (a girl can dream) and when I heard that The Hilton Queenstown ( Wakatipu Grill ) were providing High Tea at their gorgeous right-on-the-water restaurant I rang the Queen to ask if she fancied popping over.
High Tea has it’s origins in the 19th century, an experience of the rich and included cakes and finest teas to quench the thirst of the ladies and gentlemen of the time. It also conjure up images of lovely lace table cloths and lots and lots of sitting around so this girl was in heaven.
The Wakatipu Grill is a gorgeous boat ride or fifteen minute (from Central Queenstown) car journey away. A chance to escape the hub bub and sit, sip and settle into luxurious surrounds whilst quenching your thirst (it’s hard going this life) on delicious cakes and teas and something bubbly should the mood take you (it did, it did!). We headed to The Wakatipu Grill and settled in.
Delicious cakes, light little sandwiches (go the egg mayonnaise!) and scones with jam and home made clotted cream. We obviously discussed jam or cream first (I think I’m a cream first kinda girl) and a lovely pot of camomile. We sat and watched the boats fly by, people meandering along the front and bikes whizzing past without a care in the world. Cakes and tea and a little something bubbly. My kind of Sunday.
If you want to make a complete day of it there’s also a spa! Eforea beckons.
High Tea is on every Sunday throughout Spring and Summer at:
79 Peninsula Road
