I rather like my hair and it’s goldenness but I don’t often give it the love it needs. I probably get it cut twice a year, whack some goop in it when I remember to wash it and sometimes only sometimes (birthdays, the Queen visiting) get it ‘done’.
Recently The Salon (owner the very clever Amber Brinsdon) has opened up over on beautiful Kelvin Heights to rapturous applause. A sublime new hair and makeup salon next to The Hilton which I visited to experience their Opalex treatment.
Sounding completely ‘science-y’ and way over my head, the lovely Elaine (my hairdresser) explained that Opalex is a treatment that links all the broken bonds in hair that happens through chemical treatments such as colouring.
I’ve been colouring my hair (gasp from my husband) for around twenty years now and sometimes I daren’t look at the split ends. Opalex manages, in it’s wisdom, to make hair stronger and softer and feel like a cloud has been places on your head. I like clouds very much and so having them in my hair sounded like a dream.
The treatment takes around an hour and after that a good wash or three and one of the mightiest loveliest head massages (don’t you love that bit at the hairdressers) I was done. Blow dry and a curl and I felt like a new woman. I actually looked like a grown up. And that my friends, doesn’t happen very often.
Someone actually stopped me in the street and said “something’s different about you”. I replied “It’s the Opalex and stalked off”. I know a good hairdresser when I see one.
Science aside The Salon is also one of those places where you gasp “I want that for my house. And that. And that. And That.” Until you’ve gone around the whole place and picked out your next Christmas list in one feel swoop.
Golden globes of light matched with hints of green and pink and white dreamily fit against the backdrop of The Remarkables casting they eyes over The Salon. I know where they’re getting their yearly hair cut.
It’s so wonderful when you see someone go out on their own. To listen to their brave voice talking and just do it. Amber has created an experience in a beautiful place all tied up in a wonderful bow of treating yourself. Except it shouldn’t be a treat. This is somewhere you should go regularly to sit and be pampered.
