Big Fig has arrived in Queenstown bringing it’s ‘slow food cooked fast’ mantra to Shotover Street. Served up in the form of rotisserie chickens, mouth watering lamb and cranberry infused meatballs, beef cheeks cooked overnight in pomegranate and red pepper paste, big bowls of super fresh salads, spice infused pilafs, smoothies, cakes. Making the breakfast, lunch and dinner crew smile as they choose the big plate every. single. time.

Let me explain.

The Big Fig story began for owners Chrissie, Shaz, Paul and Tasha way back whey they (well, three of them) were growing up. Their usual kiwi tucker was interspersed with tasty Middle eastern dishes, thanks to a Lebanese dad. A couple of years ago the team brought this good good food and brilliant flavours to Wanaka. The people of Wanaka said Yes! Now it’s our turn in Queenstown.

Arriving at Big Fig you are greeted with a large beautiful space, Moroccan plates, preserved lemons, interesting bits and pieces tucked here and there.

If you arrive for breakfast deli-style chia and bircher pots, gozleme (little pockets of meat and veggie-filled goodness), pancakes with caramel pears, herb and feta-filled frittata, spiced sourdough. COFFEE.

If in for lunch or dinner you choose your plate; small, medium, large. And then you choose the delights you want to fill it with. Chickens marinating in sumac and lemon, meatballs bathed in delicious tomato and capsicum sauce, lamb shawarma melts in your mouth, huge salads, veggie and vegan dishes ; tagines filled with yummy Summer veg, apricots and almonds and creamy golden kumura gratin. COFFEE (getting the gist?) or a cold beer/ wine for your palette.

I was lucky enough to get into the queue for lunch and barge my way to the front for you dear readers. A firm favourite with Wanaka locals and visitors to the area, Queenstown now is lucky to also have a Big Fig of it’s own.

One of my ‘top of the list’ places to go because it’s open from the moment you open your peepers (Flight Coffee NZ), to a “holy moly is it lunchtime already?”, to the last little taste of “oh go on then I’ll have dessert” dinner. All safe in the knowledge that it was dreamed up, chopped up, and prepared right in the loving arms of the team. From their imagination to your plate.

Open from 8am right on through until 9pm, you can settle that ache in your tummy at all hours. The heart and soul of the place is right up there at the counter where you make the tough choices. What do I want on my plate? Answer: Everything!

Big Fig also put their good money where their mouth is with a commitment to helping the earth with no plastic straws or bags, discounts when you use your own takeaway cups and bowls, fresh seasonal ingredients, local produce where they can.

Whenever I say to people “Big Fig“…they say “ohhhh that delicious place in Wanaka where I fill my large plate up up up?”
I can now reply “ohhh no. It’s here. It’s delicious. You don’t have to thumb a lift over the hill.”

I am so proud of this team for working so hard on this project. A beautiful space, delicious food, good coffee and Smiles. All. Round.

Go get your breakfast, lunch and dinner here. Your tum will thank you for it.
