Making the Switch to Flick Electric

It’s cold. No scrap that; it’s bloody freezing. It’s all we can talk about over our ‘hotter than hot’ hot chocolates and our triple layered puffer jackets. “What’s your house like? Does it have insulation? Are you warm? Is your house warmer than mine (can I come round if so)? What are your power bills like?”….boom! Are you using Flick Electric

I’ve lived here a while now and have been through my fair share of places to rent and also my fair share of little white envelopes that land on your doorstep. You know the scene ; sliding open with half an eye waiting to see the 4 figure $$ sign at the bottom of the sheet. It ain’t pretty, it ain’t enjoyable and it ain’t fair. We just want to be warm dammit and enjoy the Winters like the rest of the world.

I searched around for you for some time and discovered Flick Electric and the absolutely amazing just darn good stuff that they’re doing for families and the ol leccy bill. Flick Electric was started back in 2014 by six Wellingtonians to disrupt the status quo. Honesty, fairness, transparency. Flick’s core values. And if an electric company are sticking to their core values. I want to know more.

“Disruption: In business, a Disruptive innovation is an innovation that creates a new market and value network and eventually disrupts an existing market and value network, displacing established market-leading firms, products, and alliances.” (Taken from Wikipedia)

So why oh why am I singing their praises? Well, this is why. (Here’s the science; the bit we usually turn off to):

All their prices are unbundled (so what you see is what you get) and with no mark up. They get the electricity to your house and then charge you a fee to be your retailer. Saving you on average $350. You’ll also be given the tools (I’ll explain later) to see what you’re spending and also using, right in your hands. So you control it rather than a traditional company charging you what they like.

They show you the cost of the actual electricity at the price that it’s traded on the wholesale market. (Kind of like when a shoe shop buys shoes at a certain price and then sells them to you at that same price. Instead of 100% markup). The cost of moving electricity from where it’s made (ie hydro, wind farm) right into your little or big house (and into your netflix channel, because I know those long Winter nights and I know what you’re going to be doing).

The rental charges for a smart meter to be put into your property (which you probably don’t have already). A small charge that funds the Electricity Authority (the big dogs) to regulate the industry and make sure people aren’t being idiots. And then Flick’s fee, because duh they have to make some money somewhere. This also all depends on whether you’re a standard or low user.

And that’s it. No hidden charges. No “oh it was a Saturday afternoon we’ll charge you differently because we feel like it”.

Not only are they being honest, they’re shaking up the old stuffy industry and adding something fresh and new. Where you know what you’re dealing with. Winter savings guaranteed. ( WSG is for new customers who sign up (or old customers who rejoin) by 31 July)

Want more? “Yes!” I hear you scream whilst slamming a triple hot chocolate. There’s also Volt. You choose a regular weekly amount you can pay each week and if it’s more than your bill it goes into your Volt account. It then works like a credit, so if you need more you have it sitting there. Volt was designed and developed after an actual company actually listening to their customers (imagine!)

Even more??!! They’ve also just released the CHOICE (bro- get it?) tab (available in the Flick App) which is for kiwis who love their natural environment (Queenstown duh) and they want to understand the carbon impact of sticking on their hairdryer every morning. How many goat farts does it take to power a lightbulb (and all those environmental questions you may have). Where was I….?

You can download the app which tells you all the relevant info you want to know as you go along (no surprises at the end of the month). Right to your phone. They are CarboNZero Certified, Rainbow tick certified and a recipient of Consumer NZ People’s Choice Award two years in a row. (2017/18). They also sponsor One Percent Collective

AND THEY ANSWER QUESTIONS LIKE HUMAN BEINGS.

Have a read, make some new choices and save some money.
