Any excuse to get me over to Kelvin Peninsula and I’m there like a shot so when 21 day aged beef came a-calling I tripped over myself to get in my car and take the short drive over the water to beautiful Wakatipu Grill in The Hilton Queenstown.
Facing the crystal clear waters of Lake Wakatipu this restaurant boasts some of the best dishes in this beautiful place. A view to die for, roaring fire in the ‘pinot pit’ (more of that later) and some outstanding produce on your plate.
I had the offer of a babysitter and so I wasn’t hanging about to see if they changed their minds.
We had celebrated being out of the house earlier with a cheeky bubbles in The Cru Bar (which you can read all about here) and then on to the next course; dinner and maybe some dessert if we could fit it in (of course, I wouldn’t want to disappoint you).
Oysters to start with a delicious rye bread alongside. I love them clear, clean and with a squeeze of lemon. Licking fingers. I may be posh nowadays but I still know my roots.
One of the specials was 21 day aged beef, a delicious mushroom sauce and MACARONI CHEESE. Now I don’t know about you but I’d eat liver if it was covered in macaroni cheese so I went hell for leather and said yes yes yes to the special. It DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Absolutely melt in the mouth meat with a perfect side of kale alongside the MACARONI CHEESE. I licked the plate clean. Clean I tell you.
My partner in crime ordered a delicious prawn ravioli, snow pea, crushed pea and crab salad with smoked tomato dressing. The kitchen would have had no washing up our plates were so empty. A side of Agria fries with truffle oil, parmesan and aioli (which we did not need) but we absolutely finished. You’re proud of us I know.
To finish macerated strawberries (sweet as sweet can be), thick Greek yoghurt and meringue. I said I didn’t want dessert and then obviously ate all of the dish with a little “ooh just a little more”. Completely annoying my partner.
What are wives for?
Wakatipu Grill is the perfect place to head to romance your loved one, smash down some fresh local produce and be amazed that you don’t always leave your house and head over the water. It’s just there. It’s not far and it gives you a whole new view to settle your eyes on. Perfect.
A couple of cheeky local wines alongside and we were filled to bursting. We then settled in the pinot pit with luxuriously thick blankets around the fire. There was an absolutely epic sunset happening and everything was quiet on the water. What a wonderful evening we had.

I was a guest of Wakatipu Grill but as always my views and opinions are my own. If I didn’t like it, I wouldn’t write about it.
