Black Cat Book Shop Queenstown

I love books. I love the way they take you away, make you think of something in a different way and also the discussion after with others who’ve read the same. We have a book club here in Queenstown and we’d love you to join us!
I also caught up with the lovely Gail of an awesome book shop here in Queenstown Black Cat.

Who are you? Tell us about Black Cat Book Shop.
We love a good read and our store is stocked with everything from holiday paperbacks to informative local history books. We also sell rare and vintage books and we love the fact that so many have loved them over the years. We like to think of our books and customers as friends and we love matching the two up and watching friendships blossom. We encourage customer reviews online and instore.

Your own love of books must feature in the shop, where do you think it features most?
It’s sometimes hard not to turn the shop into a personal library. There is a book out there for everyone and the fact that we all read different things is what makes it so interesting. I can talk about my favourite books until the cows come home, so if you come in looking for a recommendation, be prepared for me to tell you exactly why you should read it. And have a good reason to say no!

Where do your customers come from? How do you advertise? How do they find you?
We have a great mix of locals and visitors, with some customers who make the shop their first stop when they come into town. Book readers are an inquisitive lot and they will hunt out a good bookshop. We also have a great relationships with other booksellers in town and all recommend each other. At the end of the day we want our customers to be happy! We advertise in local print media and social media.

Queenstown based. What made you come here / live here?
I was imported from overseas by my Kiwi husband and we toured about for a while until we found somewhere we liked enough to settle down. Who could not fall for the beauty and charms of Queenstown? We love the small town community and being part of it.

Which other bookshops do you keep your eye on? Who are some of your ‘must’ go to’s when you’re travelling?
I don’t discriminate! Because we are independent I tend to gravitate towards other independent book shops rather than the bigger chains. I have lost count the amount of times people have told me about Powell’s City of Books in Portland, Oregon which occupies a whole city block! One day I’ll get there.

Favourite authors currently? Any ‘must reads’ you can entice us with?
I can’t go past a good Stephen King book and have just started reading “Cell”. I want to see if it measures up to his classics such as “The Stand” and “IT”. I’m also re-reading Tim Winton’s books. A great Australian author who should be much better known in NZ.

Queenstown- any secrets you’d like to share with our readers? Favourite places to eat/ wander/ hangout?
When driving in Queenstown, expect the unexpected! Take deep breaths, smile and wave! It’s the only way to get through it. If all else fails, get someone to drive you to Smith’s- the coolest Craft beer bar in town.
