Remarkables Market 2016

Markets have that way of bringing everyone out on a Saturday, whether you’ve had a large Friday night out and need a pick me up or you want to connect with family and friends for the day, the Remarkables Market is the perfect way of doing that. There’s a heady bunch of stalls to walk around, places to sit with your coffee and people watch (my favourite) and it’s also right along side Remarkables Park where you can go and wander around there for a double whammy of shopping, gifts and treats!

If you haven’t heard about Remarkables Market you haven’t lived. You obviously haven’t experienced almond croissants, music, flowers dancing in the breeze, the smell of freshly baked bread, smiley faces and coffee. Oh the coffee. Did I mention croissants?

Remarkables Market is in it’s seventh year and grows stronger every year with it’s selection of this regions finest growers, bakers and candlestick makers. Well, I’ve not actually seen candlestick makers there but if there were some in the region they would have a stall.

Seven years of epic community building, beautiful products, things to do for kids (massive sandpit anyone?) cakes, laughing, smiling and an amazing view to boot. The Remarkables Mountain range looking over and wishing they could get in on all those croissants.

This years market starts on 22nd October and runs right through to 15th April 2017. Yes that’s right, all the way through into another year. I’m in total heaven, although my waistline won’t be. Just so happens then that I can ride my bike right from my front door along the trails to get there. So double croissants for me.

We also see some old favourites and some brand spanking new vendors such as knitwear, bakery, meats and cheeses, jewellery and gifts, cakes, coffee and tea, children’s toys and clothes, fruit and veg, fish and sushi, flowers and knits, crafts, wine and preserves.

Got a granny you adore who loves cheddar cheese? Sorted. Know your husband is looking for a certain potted plant that he can’t get anywhere else? Head here. Want to stuff yourself silly with bread and meat? I know just the stall.

This town amazes me with it’s community, some would say there’s nowhere else like it.  Many of us who live and work here are far away from where we were born, and so a culture like no other has been created. Communities from all over the world combine to come together for a day in the week where you can taste food with an Asian feel, eat cakes traditionally made in Hungary, Salmon from Stewart Island, meat with a South American twist and beautiful products made right here in Central Otago. Proud as proud can be. All wrapped up in a beautiful big red barn decked out ready for Summer.

Come lay on the grass, eat an ice-cream or two, drink coffee and listen to a local musician. While away the hours before gorging yourself on tasty treats and eat local fruit and veg picked just that morning. That’s what community is about in my book.

We will also be having a #snappersqueenstown session there at some point. Not sure what I’m talking about? Then have a read here and bring your camera/ picture taking device. All welcome.

You can also be a vendor! Have some amazing thing that you have been making in your shed for the past year and need to get it out to the masses? You can have a stall. Just get in touch with the lovely people at the Market right here.

So much to see, do and eat. Don’t get to April and say “darn it I missed it”. Go now. Take a large bag and wave at me with my camera. I’ll be the one eating almond croissants before anyone gets there.
