Driving to Glenorchy with Ignition Self Drive

Call me Bond, Jane Bond.

And now back in the real world. After driving Ignition Self Drive’s Aston Martin, getting back into my trusty Rav 4 (1995 I’ll have you know) with it’s cobwebs and bird poo was a rather heart wrenching affair. But I’ll always have the memories. Ahh the memories.

The beautiful thing about Ignition Self Drive is the ease of being able to fulfil the dream. 1) Pick your car (Aston Martin V8 Vantage for me) 2) listen to the rules and regs (standard; don’t drive too fast, pick some beautiful roads to drive on) and 3) get on your way.

While many companies come with you in the back seat, Ignition allow you to self drive yourself around this beautiful town and enjoy the wonderful things to do while you’re at it. Turn up to a Vineyard in your Volkswagen Amarok. Grab a new book at the library in your Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Visit your sister at the local supermarket in your trusty Audi R8. All now a possibility.

Driving down to Glenorchy on a beautiful Saturday morning wouldn’t have been as much fun in my Rav 4 (which I love) but the Aston Martin certainly turned some heads. It’s quite muscular and slightly lower down so you have to work out where you sit on the road, but the power and noise of the thing had me squealing. Grunt all the way.

I think I’ve become a petrol head because there’s something about the way that car (and all it’s history) makes you feel. Very British, very beautiful, regal almost. I can feel my back straighten at the thought.

There’s also other things to plan where to take your beautiful new friend for the day/week :

Photography
Take yourself to some of the best spots in Queenstown with your beast (not up the ski field of course). I’ve written a list of beautiful spots to take some snaps (spoiler: some of them only the locals know about). Get them all here.

Eats and drinks
Get yourself down to Glenorchy or into Queenstown to impress everyone in the cafe with your shiny spoiler. There’s no better way to enjoy chips and a Porsche. Read about some of my favourites here.

I also love the fact that Ignition Self Drive are all about the experience. Some of us will never own a car like this, but for a moment we can be whoever we want to be for the day (and I quite like the idea of being Princess Kate for a day). Fantasy, dreams, call it what you will, Laura and Barry (owners) want you to have a completely wonderful experience that you’ll remember forever. Have a childhood dream of driving down a gorgeous road with your partner and a picnic hamper in the back? Then it can be yours and yours to remember forever.

Moments. Life’s all about moments. And if you want to go and get your local paper from the supermarket in a Porsche, then that dream is there for the taking.

Half day/ full day and longer trips are available for you to choose and then it’s up to you to plan the most incredible ride. There’s so many amazing roads in this place you’ll be spoilt for choice.
