I’m staying here. Forever

It’s always been a fantasy of mine to wander down one of my favourite streets in Queenstown turn left and stay the night in the cocoon of luxury that is The Spire Hotel on Church Street.

Sometimes dreams come true. And I’m taking you with me.

Church Street reminds me of the laneways of Melbourne where delights hide away from the hustle and bustle of the main CBD. Where it’s not gloatingly obvious that a small ten bed luxury hotel and restaurant/ bar stand against the backdrop of the mighty Remarkables.
Luxury to me usually means buying tomatoes on the vine so this was a rather different level of where to stay here in Queenstown. When I’ve grown up properly and I want to get away for the night, The Spire would be somewhere I would head. I could work from my ginormous white sheeted bed or amble over to the equally sized bath and hang out in there with my laptop.

The perfect place to read

Let me set the scene, I know you’re dying to know. Entering the large suite in The Spire is like entering the hotel in Pretty Woman. Except it’s not 1985 and the decor is much more impressive.

A large glass fronted room looking out onto the mountains above, whilst inside layers of clean, polished luxury await.
The biggest, comfiest bed dominates the front room (which if I wasn’t going to see Star Wars I would have hopped into straight away). And on the side a large bathroom with a bathtub so big you could eat your dinner in there, and breakfast. Oh and work from there too. I think I mentioned that.

The Spire is luxury minus the snobbery. I was welcomed by one of the lovely staff and shown around my suite with a basic how to do this and that (use the touch screen remote for all your radio, tv and film watching needs), complimentary chips and fridge stocked with goodies should your midnight feast habit overcome you. Different types of pillows to get the best night sleep of your life. I felt like goldilocks when the first too soft pillow was replaced by just right.

Tea for twelve!

5 different types of tea, a soft radio playing as I entered, this girl was in heaven. I don’t want stuck up when I go away I want looked after. I don’t want “why are you here you don’t have a suit on”, I want “isn’t Queenstown lovely, now enjoy your room and relax for as long as you need”. And that’s what I got. Quiet, serene, nothing was too much trouble.

Heading out to my Star Wars extravanganza (have you seen it? No spoilers I promise) I returned to a turn down bed, heating slightly raised and a soft chocolatey truffle awaiting me on my nightstand. Looked after never felt so good.

Number one!

And the great thing is The Spire is right there in the heart of town but you are totally adrift of the, let’s face it, sometimes crazy madness of the town at times. Everything feels like Queenstown, everything looks like Queenstown but you don’t have the often rush rush of Queenstown. Do you catch my drift? Everything is on your time, when you need. And boy do we all need that sometimes.

In the morning, after I found my way out of my ginormous bed (I got lost for a second in there) I headed down to the lobby to tuck into my breakfast. Breakfast can be spent in your leopard print pjs in the privacy of your own room, in the sleek and stylish No 5 Restaurant (alongside the hotel) or, if the mood take you, over the road to the beautiful Eichardts. I really wanted to let the tourists see my new pyjama set but I opted for No 5 where a full menu of all things delicious (I went for sausage, rosti and beans) set me up for the day and coffee oh glorious coffee.

Church Street. One of my favourites

The Spire should be on your staycation list, not because it’s glorious (it is), not because you deserve to take some time out (you do) but because you have to see inside this treasure trove of luxury. To be swept away in this tiny haven of peacefulness right here in the centre of the CBD. To take an evening soak in your huge bathtub and then trip outside for a bite to eat or wander down the trails on your doorstep. And wish wish wish, as I did, that you could stay there forever.
